SHOULD FILMS IN THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE BE SUBTITLED OR DUBBED?

I. WHAT'S WRONG WITH DUBBING?

The problem with dubbing is that it, not only removes the actors' voices, but more importantly, it prevents them from fully expressing themselves and destroys the audience's desire to access the originals, which hinders progress in English. Dubbing makes ears lazy, unable to adapt to a new rhythm of words and forces you to revisit old language habits.

- Another disadvantage: you don't know the tone, vocabulary and grammatical structures used by the actors. Sad, isn't it? Some say this prevents speakers of the target language from progressing in the source language. I agree!

II. PERSEVERE IN LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

- Even if we are reluctant to learn another language and if it is difficult for us, let's go further, shall we, and persevere in learning the foreign language!

- Contrary to the popular belief that dubbing is better than subtitling because you don't risk losing the thread of the story like you do with subtitles, hearing the sound of an unknown language is unpleasant for the ears and tiring for the eyes, especially when reading the small print throughout the film. I disagree!

III. CONSIDER SUBTITLING INSTEAD OF DUBBING

- The above objections are entirely valid if you consider the complexity of reading and listening to a foreign language as a chore.

- In reality, subtitles are excellent for many reasons, including rediscovering the original version of the film through the tone, grammatical structures and vocabulary of the actors. In short, the viewer memorizes part of the film and, moreover, becomes familiar with the intonation of the voice. The advantages of subtitles outweigh the disadvantages of dubbing. So, persevere, dear learners, get your bearings and opt for subtitling over dubbing. You won't regret it!
