Pitfalls to avoid when mastering English grammar (N°2)

- To do long hours = to work long hours not: to make long hours

- For example / For instance not: by example 

- On the phone not: at the phone

- On the Internet / On the Web  not:  in the internet / in the Web

- On television - On the radio not: at television - at the radio

- I'm going back home not: I'm going back to home 

- I'm at home not: I'm at the home

- She was right not: she had reason / she had right

- The economic situation / The economic system not: the economical situation / The economical system

- Economical = cheap / inexpensive / low-budget / low-cost; someone using no more of something than is necessary = he is economical with the truth

- It's logical (= adjective) / it's judicious 

- It's logic (= noun) / it's common sense

- An electronic device not: an electronical device

- An electric car not: an electrical car

- I'm used to learning not: I'm used to learn

- I used to learn not: I used to learning

- I got used to learning not: I got used to learn

- So many things happened in your absence not: so much things

- I'm good at languages not: I'm good in languages

- I'm bad at maths not: I'm bad in maths

 - It's 10 minutes' drive from home = it's 10 minutes from the house by car

- I'm that hungry I could eat a horse = I'm so hungry I could eat a horse

- A big change not: a big changement

- This is good news / This is great news not: these are good news

- This pen is my brother's not: this pen is of my brother / this pen is at my brother

- What's the point of doing it? not: what's the point to do it?

- I look forward to seeing you again not: I look forward to see you again

- A ten-page document  not: a 10 pages document

- I have two cars. This is the faster not: I have twice cars. This is the fastest or this is the most fast

- He left it (up) to me to decide / He left it for me to decide not: he left it to decide for me 

- I worked for three hours last night not: I have worked for three hours last night 

- I will see you when the class starts not: I will see you when the class will start

- Sorry to have kept you waiting not: sorry to have kept you wait

- If you know this, all the better not: if you know this all the best

- Everything must be taken into consideration not: everything must be taken in consideration

- Let me answer your question not: let me answer to your question

- After going on vacation not: after going to vacation

- How long have you known your GP? (GP stands for General Practitioner) not: how long did you know your GP? 

- Sorry for being late / Sorry, I'm late / Sorry for my lateness / Sorry for the lateness / Sorry to be late (infrequent use) not: sorry for the delay (delay can be used both as a noun and as a verb)

- I'd rather you paid me right away not: I'd rather you pay me right away

- He won't do anything I asked him to not: he won't do anything I asked him for

- That's one mistake too many not: that's one mistake too much

- Ten thousand visitors came not: ten thousands visitors. But we can say: ten thousands of visitors came
