BOOST YOUR ENGLISH SPEAKING SKILLS
I. FIRST THINGS FIRST
- As the
title itself suggests, learning any language, including English, relies on
speaking. Here, we don't beat around the bush: if you want to familiarize
yourself with English, opt for conversation.
- However,
conversation is not the only thing worth dwelling on, as speaking is part of a
whole thing consisting of listening, interacting with people from a variety of
cultures and accents.
II. LET'S START AT THE BEGINNING
- I would advise commencing by memorizing the fundamentals of the language: saying hello, saying goodbye, repeating, thanking someone, asking and answering basic questions and so on and so forth.
- The other aspect of mastering the language
is listening to a variety of speakers to become familiar with different accents
and tones of voice.
III. WORK ON
YOUR ACCENT AND PRONUNCIATION
- In point
of fact, you can choose the type of accent you like, American English or
British English for example, by listening to it over and over again in order to
imitate the spoken details to reproduce in your daily conversations.
- It’s
largely possible for you to select a
specific accent that you wish to work on as I just said above, by listening and
doing exactly the same thing as the target language and above all, by varying
the tones of the language because, unlike French which is a language with flat
tones or German which is a language with guttural tones, English is a tonal
language, because you have to oscillate when you speak, not only to be
understood but also so that the language is music to the ears!
IV. USE CORRECT GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY
- Using
accurate grammar and vocabulary is an essential part of improving you speaking
skills, because grammar is the set of rules that allow a language to flow smoothly
through your mouth and into the ears of your interlocutors, and vocabulary is
the set of tools needed to name things appropriately so that you have the right
words at the right time to increase fluency.
- It is therefore necessary to gradually study grammar and vocabulary to understand the twists and turns of the language through its complexity. It takes a little elbow grease to learn grammar rules and vocabulary words step by step and, more importantly, to apply consistency to your language learning.
V. READING IS PART OF THE OVERALL PROCESS OF ACQUIRING SPEAKING SKILLS
- Another
aspect is reading, even if it has now fallen into disuse in favour of
smartphones. What you could do is simply read and revise the sentences that
seem essential to you here and there in order to reuse them in your
conversation as quickly as possible.
- To follow
up on your reading, you can also use your cardboard sheets containing sentences
and expressions to use in a professional space to show the premises for
example.
VI. NOTES TO USE AS A SPRINGBOARD
- As I
usually tell my learners, you will use your notes once, twice, three times and
the fourth time you will put them on the back burner since you would start
memorizing the whole kit and caboodle.
- In fact, there
is no problem in starting to learn by reading, although it is a little faster
to learn by listening because things are more automatic that way in order to immediately
reuse terms and expressions in a conversation.
VII. THE TELEPHONE
AS A MEANS OF DEEPENING SPONTANEOUS SPEECH BEHAVIOR
- Finally,
use the telephone whenever you can, volunteer, if you do not have regular
access to it because, contrary to popular belief, telephone conversations are
not difficult if you rely on sheets of cardboard filled with pre-written notes
related to the subject you wish to discuss.
- Once
again, this is just a conversation booster that will quickly be put aside when
everything is well mastered.
This ends this post until next time, take care.
As far as I'm concerned, this is exactly my daily objectives, I try to converse and if there's something I'm not sure, I write it down for me to lear new terms
